Glasgow’s premier fuzz-pop noise-terrorists St Deluxe have distilled their sound and brought you 11 tracks of melodic, blissed-out indie rock in the shape of their second album Born Into Flame. Armed with a new drummer and a renewed sense of urgency and momentum, they have streamlined their sound to deliver the most definitive and direct take on their unapologetic, viscerally engaged scuzz-rock yet.
Showcasing a range of styles from the teenage punk riot of title song/first single Born Into Flame (think Buzzcocks pop versus J Mascis fret-mangling) to the dense shoegaze fog of I Know How You Feel, the album is a giant leap forward for the band in both songwriting and sound. Second single Evil Dead is another pop gem, inspired by too many old zombie b-movies and bouncy guitar pop. Last Years Lust and Your Blood are raw guttural howls of intent, balancing aggressive vocals and noise-rock riffs to tear your face off. Album closer Falling For Your Lines ties it all up – fuzzed up, hook-laden off-kilter pop meets epic emotional outro.
The album contains re-recorded versions of recent single After the Fire/Please Be Gentle (produced by Stuart Braithwaite and Calvin Johnson respectively), and adds Gordon Keen (Eugenius & Captain America etc) to the production roster alongside regular co-conspirator Duncan Cameron.
Recent gigs have seen the band play alongside local fellow noise fans PAWS, Bronto Skylift andEdinburgh School for the Deaf as well as prestige shows with the likes of Ringo Deathstarr, Mudhoney, The Vaselines, The Telescopes, Sareena Maneehsh and Darker My Love. These have seen St Deluxe hone their blistering, unforgiving live show into an a controlled frenzy of thrills and volume.
